Just Another Day?

Nyambe came last night to ask Jeff to go and pray for his sister, who was sick. As Jeff arrived, there were several people waiting outside the hut - eerily silent. Jeff talked to Sisii, a baptized believer and the girl's father. As Jeff entered the hut, the girl was acting very strangely and it soon became apparent that this girl was more than likely demon possessed. Jeff began to pray for her, laying hands on her and calling out the demons in Jesus name. After some time, he also walked around outside with with Sisii, praying for protection on the whole family. After about an hour, the girl began to act normally and sit by the fire outside.

Witchcraft is VERY real here in Zambia and therefore, many people can become demon possessed. Sisii had asked Jeff to come to pray for his daughter because she wanted to be taken to the witch doctor. Praise the Lord for the belief of Sisii, a relatively new believer. Pray for renewed spiritual strength that will glorify the Lord in all things. Pray for Sisii's daughter that she will be delivered from the powers of darkness and accept Jesus as her Savior. Pray for us as we stand in the gap for our Lozi friends and new believers.

Zebras, Hippos, Crocodiles, Elephants and More

As we drove through Kafue National Park yesterday, we got to see lots of animals. We have gone through the Park and not seen anything but yesterday we got several treats. We saw zebra, a crocodile, hippo and these elephants. The elephants were very close to the road, so we snapped a few pictures.

The Kids Are Back!

Just about 10 minutes ago, there were about 65 kids waiting at our fence. They were waiting to hear about Jesus! Each Wednesday, we open our yard and our hearts to the neighborhood children. If you remember, it was not just 3 months ago that we were down to only about 20 kids because of rumors that had been going around about us. I'm just so grateful that the Lord has brought these children back to hear about His love for them. Rejoice with me!

Wherever we go, we attract a crowd, especially a bunch of children. I took the opportunity to tell a Bible Story to these children. Only one knew the name of God's Son that day.

A New Opportunity in Kaluwala

On Saturday, we drove an hour and a half to visit a new believer, Khoms, in Kaluwala. He is a teacher at Kaluwala Community School. In Zambia, community schools are not funded by the government so they have to provide everything for themselves - even the teachers are not paid. Below is the school. Wherever we go, we seem to attract a crowd.

Above is Pastor Vincent of Mukuma Baptist Church and Jeff. Pastor Vincent started this church all by himself and even has preaching points as far as a 5 hour walk away. He is a great man of God and is doing a fantastic job in Mukuma.

Friday, we started out across the river to fellowship with the believers in Mukuma. We first have to get on the pontoon ferry to cross the river then we had to drive about 2 hours to reach the church. As you can see, it was sprinkling pretty well in the morning.

Sweeping changes have been made in the IMB in the last 3 years because of lack of funds. Some of those changes needed to made, other changes have sadly had to limit the sending of new missionaries to the field. When Jeff was pastoring, he would exhort our church family to give more to Lottie Moon than you spend on Christmas gifts. I know that many people were very surprised by this but really, which is more important - a life changed for Christ or a toy?

Satan Strikes Again!

Living in Africa, no missionary can discount the spiritual world that swirls around us. When I lived in Texas, I didn't really give much thought to the Spirit World but living here in Zambia, we are confronted with it almost everyday - young children with woven charms around their waists, passing by the witch doctor's (traditional healer) house on our way to Sunday Worship, children and adults with white marks on their foreheads

and even amulets worn around the neck.

We are even experiencing it on a more personal level on Wednesday afternoons. The last time that we had Good News Club, several children staged a revolt right outside the gate - chanting and yelling during the Bible Story Time. Today, I noticed that our numbers were quite a bit lower than they have ever been. My helper/translator told me that some of the boys have been spreading rumors that we are taking the pictures back to America where we will sell the children. This is so heartbreaking to me because we have taken their pictures so people in America can see them and PRAY for them. This is really not too surprising to me as I have started into the stories of Jesus and Satan does not want

Jesus to be proclaimed to these children.

Please pray for God's power to be evident through the Bible stories that we tell.

Pray that His Spirit will draw the kids back to Good News Club.

Pray that the spirit of fear will be cast out of them.

Pray that they will know that they are loved by God and also by our family.

Pray for Justin - as he is one of the main boys who has been spreading these rumors.

We have had a volunteer team with us this past week and Alyssa has taken lots of great pictures. Here is another picture of my Sunday School class this morning.

We had a great time in Mukuma but we ALL got so dirty. This was a picture of Levi after Zoe pushed him in a mud hole. Evidently, he wasn't too worried about it all. I was even dirtier than I can remember being. The kids did fantastic! After I got used to camping out, I also enjoyed our time there with the believers. What a blessing they are to us!

The kids did get very tired and fell asleep just about any time they sat down.

I had the opportunity to teach the kids at Mukuma Baptist Church each day. When I first arrived in Zambia, I thought that I might be working more with the women but the Lord has turned my heart to the children. Each day, I taught them a different story. I taught the kids about David, Daniel and Shadrach, Meshack and Abednego. What a joy these children are to the Lord. I try to emphasize to them that the Lord knows their name and loves them so much.

Above is the road to Mbumi. Pastor Vincent from Mukuma Baptist Church has started some new preaching points. Mbumi is a 5 hour walk for him. It took us a little over an hour to drive there. We went through very thick forests, vast bush and endless floodplains to get to Mbumi. Below are some of those at Mbumi. The Choirmaster, in orange, was teaching them some new songs. Jeff and Nicholas (volunteer from Spurger, TX) will be going back to Mbumi next week to do some leadership training with some new believers.

Here are the two new additions to our family.

On top is Jose' and enduring his love is our new kitten, Lila (long e sound). We named the kitten Lila because she has almost cried non stop since we got her two days ago. The SiLozi verb for 'to cry' is kulila, so therefore - her name, Lila. We have had a time trying to socialize the kitten as she was half wild when we got her. She is coming along and allows us to hold/pet her. She still almost cries non stop unless she is asleep or someone is holding her.

Both Lila and Jose' are the exact same coloring - white and tan. As you can see, they are becoming friends until Lila spits and scratches Jose' then he goes off and leaves her alone until the next round.....

The Canine Factor

Just wanted to show a picture of the new addition to our family. This is Jose'. He is a 7 week old Jack Russell and brand new to our family.

We can't forget about Titus. We have had him awhile. He's a Rhodesian Ridgeback. He is just over 2 years old. He is our guard dog. Titus has to work for his food while Jose' gets fed just because he is cute.

Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe

While the guys were running, Melynda and I took the kids to the bridge that spans between Zimbabwe and Zambia. It spans the glorious Victoria Falls. We had quite an adventure to get there and it was a little longer walk than expected but we had a great time. Below is the Zimbabwe Border Post - Levi, Madylanne and Zoe.

This is just a glimpse of Victoria Falls. I think that I heard that the Falls actually span over a mile. It is dry season in Zambia right now but in rainy season, the whole Falls gushes with water.

Update on Levi

Levi began the week in therapy with a Language and Listening Evaluation. We got his scores yesterday and it was good news! Out of 100 (which is the average), he scored 92 on his oral and 98 on his listening which means he now falls into the NORMAL category. We are so excited for him! He continues to have speech delay issues but he has made so much progress within these last 13 months. We praise the Lord for ALL things that come from Him!

Life and Death, Darkness and Light

Two days ago, our neighbors' 35 year old son died - most likely of AIDS. There is such sorrow next door. At unexpected intervals, we can hear their sounds of grief. We went to visit them yesterday - to pray for them and share some of God's love for them. Such a burden to bear.

Four days ago, during Jeff's Tuesday Bible Study, another neighbor was saved! She is 67 years old and has never heard the truth of salvation by faith. Here, they are told that one is saved through works and not by faith. She was wondrously saved by FAITH in Christ!

Life and death just next door. Please continue to pray for the salvation of the Lozi and Luvale. Pray that we will have the words to share in all situations and opportunities.

I know that I send out a monthly update with specific prayer requests for each day but these requests below really cut to the chase into the daily lives of all missionaries living all over the world. Any missionary would tell you that the battle is won or lost in prayer. We all covet your prayers and daily rely upon your support.

Pray that they would be confident in God's Word. (Acts 13:4-6)

Stepping Out in Faith...

We have been very encouraged the last two Sundays that we have met with the group of believers in Lisheshe/Kashushu. Saturday, when Jeff went to Kashushu for Bible Study the area chief came and met with us and assured us the plot of land has been given to the people. What wonderful news and we give God all the praise and honor and glory for these results. However, the body of believers have decided to wait until the case is heard on the 23rd of August before they clear the land. They don't want there to be any problems. We think this is a good idea.

So, please continue to pray concerning the plot. Also, Sunday morning, our group of believers decided to have what we refer to as an informal business meeting and voted to step out in faith and begin to secure the poles that will be necessary to build a permanent structure to meet. They know a place about 14 kilometers outside of Lukulu to cut good poles for a structure. This week one of the believers will find out the cost to transport the poles to one of the believers homes.

Please pray that the believers will give so the cost of the transport can be paid and the poles delivered and please pray that the enemy and his workers will not gain any foothold within this group so that God's work will not be hampered.

Advance Warning...

Just wanted to give you some advance warning and ask you to pray for The Good News Club on Wednesday, August 10th. We begin at 5pm which is 11am EST and 10am CST. Jeff leaves for Lusaka on Tuesday and will return on Sunday afternoon. Which means he will not be here to help with the kids on Wednesday. All the kids got out of school on last Friday for a month. Even when the kids were in school, we were running about 70 – 80 kids.

So, I am asking that you might start now – praying for a great day of Good News Club. Pray that the kids will listen well during the Bible study. Pray that they will understand God’s love for them. Pray that we will be able to manage all the kids. Pray that the game time will be organized and fun for all. Pray, pray, pray!

Also, Jeff leaves for Lusaka on Tuesday morning , the 9^th, and will not return until Sunday afternoon, the 14th. I never like it when Jeff is gone but this time, I am really liking it even less. Please pray for the kids and I as we hold down the home front here in Lukulu.

We usually let them in about 4:15pm and then we start our ministry at 5pm. Please continue to pray that the children will know that they are special and that God loves them.

I was sitting outside while the kids played before Good News Club and all these little girls came up to sit with me. The little one sitting to the left of me was about 6 years old. She was taking care of the littlest one sitting beside her. It is so heartbreaking to see a 6 year old strap a 1 year old on her back like a pro. Mwangala, the one in the black dress by Levi, stuck by me the whole time. I practiced my Lozi on her and she practiced her very confused look on me. :)

I Believe in Prayer

A situation came up on Monday.

Jeff had left at 8am to head across the river to do leadership training at Mukuma Baptist Church. He took off with one sandwich, one cliff bar and two good size bottles of water. To get to Mukuma, he first had to board the pontoon to take him across the Zambezi River. After disembarking on the other side, it is still an hour and a half drive to the church. He had a great time of teaching there at the church. On his way back, the vehicle got stuck. Even though he was in 4 wheel drive low, he had to pass through the muddy area and climb a small incline to clear the area. He got through most of the muddy patch but got stuck on the way out up the incline. After about an hour of working to get unstuck, he calls me on the satellite phone to tell me that he was not going to make it home that night - that he was stuck and as of yet, was not able to get out. All in all, NOT a good situation at all.

Needless to say, I was very worried and concerned about the whole situation. He did not have enough food and water to last the day, no blankets (it's still cold here), no mosquito net and no tent. Plus, I had no way to lock our front gate as Jeff had the key...

Almost as soon as I got off the phone with Jeff, his parents called to tell me that Jeff had gotten in touch with them and would not be home tonight. Just because of the stress of the moment and the total unknown, I broke down crying on the phone. On the phone, Jeff's dad prayed with me and assured me that they would start their church's Prayer Chain to pray about this situation.

I had also texted our fellow team mates and they began to pray. One dear friend, called to pray with me on the phone.

After two and a half hours, Jeff was finally able to get unstuck and now it was a race against time to try to get to the river bank so the pontoon could take him across to our side of the river. He called the pontoon conductor and (for an extra price) the pontoon conductor came across the river to pick up Jeff after dark.

ALL this to say that I truly believe in prayer. The Lord is teaching me every day to trust him more and put everything in His hands. I believe it was only through the prayers of the faithful that Jeff got home on Monday night about 8:30pm. I pray that through our lives here in Lukulu that we are also teaching our children to completely TRUST in the Lord.

#1 Where were you 730 days ago? I know exactly where I was! Two years ago today, we arrived in Lusaka, Zambia! I still vividly remember that day. I remember walking out of the airport into the hugs of our new team members. We are so glad that we are here!

#2 We are so looking forward to September. Nicholas and Alyssa Peveto arrive in Lukulu on September 24. Tomorrow (after church), First Baptist Church-Spurger is helping them raise money for their mission trip with a benefit lunch. Please pray that the Lord will move His people to be super generous and just overwhelm Alyssa and Nicholas with His blessings. If you live near them and can help them monetarily with this trip, make it a point to get in contact with them. I know they will appreciate any and everything you can do to help them!

Eating with Your Hands - Zambian Style

At least twice a week, we eat Zambian food for lunch. The kids really enjoy it, especially because they get to eat with their hands. Today, we had chinese cabbage with our buhobe (nshima). The chinese cabbage (green) is cut into thin strips and cooked with tomatoes, onions, oil and salt. The buhobe is kind of like grits with all the water cooked out. The idea is to make a little ball with the buhobe, push a little indention into it and then pick up the chinese cabbage and eat it all together. Come on over to our house and we'll teach you how to eat it! Yummy!

A New Beginning

We are asking you to especially be in prayer for our group of new believers that meet on Sunday mornings. This group of believers are made up of two different villages; Lisheshe and Kashushu. Over the last several months they have brought to me the question concerning a place for us to meet on Sunday mornings. This morning the group selected two representatives from each village to go together this week and talk with the local chief about a plot of land so they can construct a church building. We are asking you to be praying for these four people as they will approach the chief this coming week with this request. We are asking you to specifically pray, if this is God's timing, he would soften the heart of the chief to their request and grant them a plot of land so they can construct a building. The majority of this group of believers are new Christians and we will continue to work with them to teach them the principles concerning a NT church. This is a large commitment and undertaking for this group and we are asking you to pray they will stay the course and remain faithful and that this would strengthen their faith. Please join us in prayer this week and lift this request up on a daily basis to our Heavenly Father.

Another Week of Children's Ministry

We had another great day of Children's Ministry. I think that we are conflicting with school now that the kids have returned to school this week. We had about 55 kids this week. We had a great time learning about Adam and Eve, playing Shark and Minnows and Duck, Duck, Goose. I am amazed how long it takes just to try to explain how to play Duck, Duck, Goose! We are changing the time for next week so that they kids will come at 5pm instead of 3pm. I am happy with any kids that come as they are little hearts that the Lord can teach, no matter how old they are. Praise be to the Lord for all that He is doing in the lives of these Lozi children!

Today was the first day of our Weekly Kids' Time at our house. Jeff got a final count of about 85 children. The ones that you see are just a glimpse of their faces. I asked each one of their names (a bit challenging) then went on to say that I would probably not remember their names but that God knows each one of their names and loves them all very much. I reminded them that God knows their name and they are very special to Him. From there we talked about all the things that God created. I got them around to God created the fish in the sea and that segued into playing Sharks and Minnows. It was a bit chaotic. The sharks are supposed to tap the minnows as they run by but some of them were tackling them to the sand. The kids didn't seem to mind too much but they all had fun. From there, I taught them the story of Creation with them acting things out for each day. It was a wonderful time with the kids and I am so happy that 85 children got the chance to hear that they are special and that God loves them! Tune in for more info next week. I'm sure that we will have even more kids. Yay, God!

Everyone in Lukulu knows when a plane comes in as we all can hear it. The plane is usually mobbed by kids and adults alike.

Baptism in Lukulu

Today we had the incredible privilege to be a part of our first baptism in Lukulu. Damien accepted Christ in the village of Kashushu on Saturday. Jeff had gone to the village to share the stories of ‘Creation to Christ’. Damien was one of four people who said that they wanted to restore their relationship with God through Jesus. He came to our house on Sunday to learn about baptism, and Damien decided that he wanted to be baptized. We were going to baptize him on Monday but it rained and stormed all afternoon and night. Damien came back today to the Tuesday Bible Study and some of us went with him to the Zambezi River so that we can be a part of this special time. Just wanted to show you a few pictures.

The river ran out and we were in the floodplains. The guys had to pole us through shallow water for well over 2 hours.

My view on the way back to Lukulu after spending the night in the village.

We have had a very interesting weekend. Here is the story - our plans were to camp out across the river with the one Baptist Church. Not my cup of tea but I knew that we would need to do this when we came over here. We had two church members make the trip across the river to help guide us back across. We had to totally scrap our plans. On Wednesday, I had noticed that Levi had a red circle on the side of his nose. The redness had spread out and inside the circle had become very yellow and pus-y. It kept spreading toward his eye and underneath it. I was very concerned with it. We had 2 choices - scrap everything and drive 10 hours to Lusaka where they might not even know what it was or head upriver in the boat to a Mission Hospital run by Canadians, Americans and Irish. We decided to take Levi to the mission hospital at Chitokoloki on Saturday instead of heading to the church. We thought we would go there on Saturday and continue on to the church on Sunday. We took the boat 3 hours up the Zambezi. They have American, Canadian and Irish doctors and nurses. They took such good care of us and just welcomed us into their community. We were so blessed! It ended up being Herpes which is the cold sore, chicken pox and shingles virus (also can be contracted as an STD). There just happened to be 3 visiting pediatricians who were there and they said it was a very good idea to come because the virus could have ulcerated his eye and then it would have been very dangerous. The kids spent the afternoon swimming and playing with 2 girls, MKs who live there. Two different families fed us lunch and supper. We left Chitokoloki at 7:15am on Sunday. That is my new favorite place. We might even go there for a couple days vacation. We stayed in a 2 bedroom little house. We could bring our food, hang out with the missionaries and swim in the pool. :) It only took about 2 hours to get almost back to Lukulu where we have to then take the Lundwebungu River to the church. 5 hours later, we sort of arrived. We had 2.5 hours of running the boat and then about 2.5 hours of poling through the floodplain (shallow water that is dry land in the dry season). We were already tired from sitting on the boat and then when they stopped to pole, I literally thought that I was going to burst into flames - it was so hot with hardly any breeze and no shade. We finally got to where the water was too shallow then we had to jump out and wade through the water, mud, grass and finally found a path up to the village. We had mud to our knees. Levi had fell in the water, several times. Zoe had mud up to her shoulders.

So we arrived to sit in the shade for a while and Fransis (secretary of the church) sent some men, women and children to empty the boat. It was about 3pm and we had not ate lunch. We took the kid into the bush and made them scarf a Clif Bar. About an hour later, Fransis and Jeff went to the church. Jeff thought he was just going to talk with the pastor but they had assembled all the people to have a second service of the day. They were gone over 3 hours. I just sat with the women while they basically ignored me and the kids stared a hole in us. Levi and Zoe got up and played tag with the kids for a while. Jeff and Fransis got back around 8pm. We were all starving and exhausted. We were eating buhobe and our tortilla soup at about 9pm. We put the kids in the tent about 9:30pm - in their clothes, no wash off, no teeth brushed. Because I didn't go to the service, the people wanted to come and greet me. No one really arrived until about 9:45pm. Jeff sat and talked with the pastor while I dozed in and out and we finally got to bed around 11pm. I slept in all my clothes, didn't even brush my teeth. I didn't have the energy to find the toothpaste and brush. I think that was a first!

We slept until about 5:30am when a rooster that had to be right beside the tent, started crowing. He was the only rooster that was crowing in the village and he was as RIGHT beside US!!! So we left about 10:30am. We had 4 guys plus Jeff poling for us this time and it took only over an hour. Then we dropped 2 of them off and 2 more a little later down the river so it was just us for about an hour. Again, we were starving but the food we had had to be warmed up. We had 4 Clif bars left over and I ate a few pieces of dried dried apricot. So we got home, took showers, ate lunch/supper at about 3:45pm - we were so hungry. Even though I slathered sunscreen on, we are all sunburned! The inside of my ears are sunburned! It looks so much better looking BACK on it. It was definitely hard while we were there but so worth it as we look back. I look forward to going back - now there is a miracle from the Lord!

As we drive the 10 hours that take us from Lusaka to Lukulu, we have to drive through Kafue National Park. We regularly see lots of warthogs, lechwe, baboons and monkeys. Some times, we see elephants and hippos. This is only the second time that we have seen zebras. They were very curious and stood still watching us drive by.

For the past several months there has been increased discussion and sporadic rioting in Mongu, Zambia, revolving around the Western Province of Zambia seceding from the rest of Zambia to form their own independent country. These feelings are not new, but have been simmering for years. Pray for peace to reign in Western Province, and specifically Mongu and Limulunga. While the recent rioting has mainly involved rock throwing and destruction of property, there have been at least two and possibly 4 people killed. Pray that the violence would stop, that the police would be able to control the rioters without lethal force. The Lozi protesters are calling for all tribes, (Mbunda, Luvale, Luchazi, etc) to leave the Western Province by mid-February. Daren has called a number of the believers around the province, and they generally feel that this is just way to put pressure on the government. These tribes have been living together peacefully since the 1800's. The Baptist believers in the Western Province are a combination of all the tribes, pray for the safety of these dear brothers and sisters, that any feelings of alienation would be resolved. The Litunga (Lozi Paramount Chief) does not support any of the protesters demands. We have also been told that everything is peaceful in other locations throughout the Western Province and that as of Sat. morning the rioting in Mongu has stopped and all is quiet. Pray that the Zambian government would listen to the concerns of the Lozi people and that the problems would be addressed and resolved. Pray that we will experience the peace of God through all of this. We will contact the U.S. Embassy to see if they will allow us to return back to Lukulu on Saturday. Usually these conflicts are very localized and the possibility of problems in Lukulu are low. Thank you for lifting up the Upper Zambezi Team, the believers in the Western Province and all the residents before the Lord.

Time to Fly

Dear Friends and Family,

We have safely arrived in London with a relatively uneventful flight. We still have one more 10 hour flight that we drop us in Lusaka. We have had an incredible whirlwind vacation in Texas. Honestly, I had kind of thought that we were 'out of sight, out of mind' for most of you but I was completely mistaken. Our family has been literally swept off our feet by all of your continued love, prayers and support. I think that was exactly what we needed as we just passed our half way point of our term. You have revived and refreshed our spirits through all of your smiling faces and hugs. We praise the Father, Most High for how He used you to truly minister to us. We look forward to the ministry that lies before us in Lukulu and know that your prayers go before us.

Words cannot describe our gratitude.

So, simply - thank you.

We arrived safely on the other side, even though the pontoon had a leak and was the be fixed. We had a second of panic when we arrived on the other side and the pontoon driver said he was putting the pontoon up for repairs today and wouldn't run again that day. I got on my phone, texting some of our team members to pray and we left - with the faith that the Lord would take care of it all. After about an hour and a half of driving on an ox cart path, we arrived at our friend's house. We were driven around a bit, meeting some church members and family members then we arrived at the church - after fording some pretty deep streams (while I prayed fervently that we would not get stuck). As we arrived, the church members began to sing, beautifully. I cried as we shook hands with everyone - I was so happy to finally be there. We had about a 3 hour worship service. They had made these wonderful instruments. We have never been at a church before that had homemade guitars (that worked!) and homemade bass. It was a great worship service!

New Friends in Lukulu

Our fence in Lukulu is chain link, as you can see. So far, we really like this better than the high 8 feet concrete walls that we had in Mongu. We really feel like we are more a part of the community. Brona, who lives next door to us, came over to meet the kids the other day. They played a little while inside the fence then went outside. Yes, Levi's hands really are that dirty...

Our yard in Lukulu does not have any trees. The girls can climb on the water tower but nothing beats a good tree. This tree sits right outside our fence.

This is what we managed to get from Mongu to Lukulu. The bigger trailer was broken and we had to use this smaller trailer. We got the majority of our stuff but will still need to go back next week to get the rest. In the white trailer, under all the furniture is our half crate that had our sofa bed and a few other things in it. The guy in the hat is Dwayne, for whom you have been praying. The little green trailer is the one that we haul back and forth from Lusaka.

Traveling To and From Lukulu

Just wanted to give you a glimpse of the road to Lukulu. We travel 4.5 hours down a dirt road to arrive in Lukulu. It is only about 120 miles but it takes so long because the road is incredibly rough. From Lukulu to Lusaka, it takes 10 hours.

We waited all day yesterday for the much anticipated crates to arrive but, alas, they did not. We called the driver but we must have the wrong number because no on there would speak English to us. A thousand things could have happened. The truck could be stranded on the road, out of cell phone service. We have seen many trucks who have had to camp out on the side of the road until the right part could be found. Or maybe the truck just arrived late last night and he just didn't call us to tell us that he arrived. Please pray that the crates will arrive safely early this morning (Thursday, 4 November). We only have a few days until we have to head to Lusaka on Sunday, 7 November. That is part of the frustration that we finally get here and have to turn around and leave for Levi's therapy. Please pray for joy in the midst of our daily struggles. We could never do this without your support. Thank You!

Destination Lukulu, I mean Lusaka...

I cooked all weekend and prepared everything needed for a week in Lukulu. We started off for Lukulu today and ended up in Lusaka. For those of you who know, Lusaka is NOT on the way to Lukulu. Jeff felt that there were some problems with the shocks on the vehicle so we made the difficult decision to pass by the turn off to Lukulu and head on another 5 hours to Lusaka. We were able to get the vehicle in the shop today and it should be ready tomorrow. As it turned out, we had a back shock that was broken. I'm so thankful that the Lord led us onto Lusaka to get it fixed. We hope to leave here on Wednesday and drive straight to Lukulu which should take about 9+ hours. We will stay there to continue working on the house and will head back to Mongu on Monday. While we are there, we may have the opportunity to go to church at the only Baptist church in the area which is actually about 3 hours to the west of the town of Lukulu. So, we go to eat out tonight at the only and very new Mexican food restaurant. We will enjoy eating out tomorrow and then hope to leave on Wednesday. The photo above is pretty typical of the roads around here but this one actually seems to be in very good shape. Our roads in the Western Province have huge potholes - hence, the broken shock. :)

Not too much going on around here (Mongu, Zambia) for the Lowe Family. We have finished our first year of full time language study and are still waiting to move to Lukulu. Actually, we have been waiting for almost a full month. We have to go to Lusaka on September 5 for a week of Levi's speech therapy and a Upper Zambezi Team meeting, so we are really hoping/praying that we will move very soon after we get back on September 11. This move is not as simple as packing boxes and going. We first have to figure out how to get the furniture that we had made, the washing machine and dryer from Mongu to Lukulu plus all the boxes and suitcases and foot lockers. Then our crates have to come from Lusaka to Lukulu which will take at least 10 hours, part of that will be down some very difficult roads. Then when the crates (700 cubit feet) arrive in Lukulu, we have to figure out how to get them to our house-which I just learned today-has no road to it. The 'road' that we had been using is actually our neighbors' front yards. So, we ask that you might remember us in these next weeks as we try to be patient and prepare for this move in the best way we know how. When we finally do have a 'Move Date' then things will quickly get chaotic and frenetic. Pray that we will keep our hearts in the Word and take our daily nourishment from Him.

As part of our homeschool this year, we are learning about the Jewish Feasts. Our first experience was a Sabbath (Shabbat) celebration. I made the traditional hallah bread and we followed all the elements of the Jewish celebration of the Sabbath (with grape juice, of course!). It has reminded me the importance of a day of rest and reflection. Praise the Lord that Jesus is the Lord of the Sabbath!

One Year Anniversary at Victoria Falls-Livingstone, Zambia

Yesterday was our one year anniversary of being here in Zambia. We were able to go to Victoria Falls with the Allens. Here are some of the group, getting ready to get wet at Vic Falls. The second picture is a double rainbow over the falls and the last is the whole group (facing the sun-that's why the funny faces).
